A combined sewer overflow last weekend in Haverhill has resulted in untreated wastewater entering the Merrimack River.
Many towns downstream of Haverhill have been impacted by this spill including the Rowley River because its outlet to the Plum Island Sound could potentially have been subjected to some of the diluted concentration of the sewerage. As a precaution, the Rowley Health Department has taken water samples in the vicinity of the Town Landing and Marine Biological Laboratory downstream. The result of these tests taken on July 1, 2026 and analyzed by a state certified lab verify that the waters of the Rowley River are extremely safe for water related activities for the weekend and into the summer.
